Moving on to BYU Spring Sports

Basketball has ended and now that Spring is upon us (even though the weather isn’t yet) we shift our focus to the spring sports of BYU; baseball, softball, men’s volleyball, and spring practices for football. As always, BYU men’s volleyball team is looking good and they are an exciting team to watch, baseball is always fun to watch with the picturesque view of the mountains in the background, and spring football brings excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season.

BYU Sports Update

Women’s Sports

  • Softball: The Cougars took on the Broncos from Boise St where they fell 3-8. The games against Idaho St and Utah St were canceled because of the weather. The ladies take on Utah Tech today with the Purple and Gold Challenge later this week and weekend where they face LSU and Lousiana Tech. BYU is now 14-7 on the season.
  • Tennis: The Cougars took on Gonzaga over the weekend winning 6-1. They then took on Portland and won 7-0. The ladies are now 10-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. They face San Diego this weekend in San Diego.
  • Track and Field: Cierra Alphin cleared a personal best as she won the high jump competition while highlighting a good weekend for the Cougars in San Diego. BYU jumps, throws, sprints, and hurdles head to Austin, Texas, while the distance team will return this weekend in the Stanford Invitational in California.

Men’s Sports

  • Baseball: BYU took on UVU in a cross-town matchup in Provo with the Cougars pulling out the win 15-7. The Cougars then welcomed St Mary’s to Provo for a 3-game series where BYU dropped the first two games, 8-11 and 4-6, but won the last game of the series, 4-3. BYU takes on UVU again this week followed by a 3-game series with Gonzaga in Spokane. The Cougars are now 8-14 on the season.
  • Tennis: BYU lost to Gonzaga and Portland in consecutive days 0-4. These two losses put the Cougars at 3-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play. They now welcome #16 Stanford and #27 San Diego to Provo this weekend in two big matches.
  • Volleyball: #8 BYU took on #7 Pepperdine in Provo this weekend where the Cougars won in 5 sets on Friday with the 5th set being won 15-11. The Cougars then came back on the next day, Saturday, where they won again in 5 sets with the 5th set being won, in a super close game, 15-13. BYUs next games are this weekend against USC in Provo.
  • Track and Field: Caleb Witsken, the All-American, placed second in the pole vault in the SDSU Aztec Invitational. Same as the ladies, the jumps, throws, sprints, and hurdles will head to Austin, Texas, and the distance teams will head to Stanford for the Stanford Invitational.

BYU Sports News

If you haven’t seen what Jaren Hall, Puka Nacua, and Blake Freeland have been doing at the NFL Draft Combine check that out for sure. Those 3 were all invited to the combine and especially Freeland put on a show with the highest jump at 37 inches. A 6 foot 8 302 pound person jumped 37 inches!! The next highest among linemen was 34.5 inches. Other BYU players and these 3 all worked at the BYU Pro day this last Saturday. All of these guys are working out trying to position themselves to be drafted and improve their position. Hayes and Brooks did really well to improve their position on Saturday at the BYU Pro day. As it stands, my current draft predictions are:

  • Blake Freeland: 2nd round
  • Puka Nacua: 4th or 5th round
  • Jaren Hall: 5th round
  • Chris Brooks: 7th round or UDFA
  • Kaleb Hayes: 7th round or UDFA

If you want another tidbit that I am interested in, it looks like the Rams are also interested in Jaren Hall! Matthew Stafford approves.

The draft takes place April 27th-29th.

BYU Football Spring Practice

BYU just wrapped up their third week of Spring practice. From what I have been seeing and what the coaches and players are saying is that the defense is new. Not hard, but new. There’s a lot to install and incorporate. But the amount of pressure and disruption that is being installed and incorporated is apparently a welcome sign. Just listen to what Caden Haws had to say about the defense about a week ago. Two words that he mentioned that I really liked; havoc and aggressive. I love that, you love that, and hopefully, we, as BYU fans this fall, love it.

March Madness

I know for a fact that we all picked 9-seed FAU, 5-seed San Diego St, 5-seed Miami, and 4-seed UConn to be the Final Four when the brackets came out right, right? This has been the craziest March Madness in a while. For the first time ever we had no 1 seeds in the Elite 8, and no 1, 2, or 3 seeds in the Final Four. Other than UConn, every team is making its debut in the Final Four. It is the first time that 3+ teams are making their debut in the Final Four since 1979. Just let all these facts soak in and you’ll realize it has been a wild ride. But that is what makes March Madness the greatest time in sports.
