I am fidgeting just sitting here as I write this. BYU has landed a one of a kind basketball player. He plays in the Euroleague right now for Real Madrid and is only 18 years old.
Egor Demin Commits to BYU Basketball
Egor Demin has committed to BYU basketball for this upcoming 2024-2025 season. Demin has spent the last year playing for Real Madrid in the Euroleague. He is 6 foot 9 inches with a wingspan almost at 7 feet. He is a projected 2025 NBA draft lottery pick and it is now BYU’s and Kevin Young’s job to help him prepare and live up to those expectations. Demin is a serious stud. He can play any position from 1-4, is a good ballhandler, has a great mid range shot, really good passer, and is super crafty when it comes to creating his own shot.
BYU Fit
One reason why I think he fits really well for BYU is mostly because of what he does on offense. Young has talked about wanting to run an up tempo pace with guys who can shoot. That is Egor Demin. He excels in the open floor and loves to get on the fast break. With his creativity, shot making, and passing skills, he is a dream come true. He also has length and is super hard for the opposition to guard him. Here are some highlights of Egor Demin for you to check out. He is #9 in all of these highlights. He also seems like a very smart player as well.
Demin will most likely play the 3 for BYU. I can see Hall, Baker/Knell, Demin, Saunders, and Fouss/Keita starting for BYU. I think BYU will look for another 4/PF in hopes of having Saunders come off the bench because that is where he really excels.
BYU is still waiting on a decision from UCLA transfer Berke Buyuktuncel. He took official visits to BYU and Nebraska and it is supposedly down to those two teams. If he commits, that would most likely be BYU’s team. Berke could start at the 4 with Hall, Baker (I think he should start over Knell), Demin, Berke, and Keita or Fouss. Then you can have Knell, Saunders, and Fouss or Keita coming off the bench. Those are 3 quality guys coming off the bench.
BYU Is NOT Done Yet
As great as it would be to have Berke commit, BYU is not done yet though. With Demin committing, BYU has 3 scholarships left. One of those could be Berke. But if BYU doesnt get him, I expect them to continue to go after a couple of big guys.
An update from last weeks recruiting: Maxim Logue, the freak athlete forward recruit from France supposedly is going to commit to Oregon St and BYU is out. Nothing is official yet, but that is the chatter. Chaz Lanier, a guard, who is ranked higher than Jaxson Robinson and plays similarly to him, has committed to Tennessee. Berke Buyuktuncel, a UCLA transfer forward is mulling his decision between Nebraska and BYU. But there is a new transfer that BYU is now going after in Mawot Mag.
He played at Rutgers last year. He is a 6’7 forward. Mag is not great offensively, averaging only 9 points per game, but he is a menace on the defensive side of the ball. Last year, the Rutgers head coach called Mag the best defensive player has ever coached. Just a couple of weeks ago, Mag cut down his list to 5 schools. BYU, Clemson, San Diego St, USC, and Southern Mississippi. Since May 16th, when he narrowed his decision, he has not cut down his list to 2, BYU and San Diego St.
Itll be interesting to see how this shakes out and it sounds like a decision will come soon. I am sure that BYU will be happy to take either Berke or Mag.
BYU Recruiting Update
Then there is an interesting update that come out from Aaron Torres, a host for Fox Sports Radio. Here is the video that he released. He gives a ton of little tidbits of information about BYU and where they are right now in the recruiting process.
The first thing I want to talk about is Jaxson Robinson. He said that if we asked him like 2 or 3 weeks ago what shot BYU had in getting Robinson, it was 0%. But he said that now, it will most likely be between BYU and Kentucky if he does decide to come back to college. AND that BYU feels good about their chances in landing Robinson. That is a huge change from before.
The second thing I want to talk about is that Aaron mentions that BYU is going to have a very high profile recruit visit in the next couple of weeks. He didn’t say whether that recruit was for this year or next year, but it is interesting nonetheless. He also mentions that a certain player may get released from his NLI to a current university and BYU likes their chances to land him.
So BYU is not done yet and there is going to be a lot of smoke throughout the summer and early fall. I am very interested to see how BYU fills in those last 3 scholarship offers. BYU also still has 2 or 3 more assistant coaches to hire. So exciting times are still ahead!
